The Chinese Ox in Southern California
2020 was definitely a great year for starting new hobbies. One of the new things I learned was drawing and painting. This guó huà style drawing, which is a traditional Chinese painting style, features a jacaranda tree and an ox. The jacaranda tree represents Southern California, which is my current home. Meanwhile, the ox represents the Year of the Ox of the Chinese New Year Zodiacs. I used the guó huà style because I am learning drawing and painting via online lessons from my cousin who is living in China. Together, the jacaranda tree and the ox in the guó huà style symbolize my ancestry, family in China, my current home, and the new skill I learned.

During the pandemic I took up the hobby of drawing. I had to find ways to keep myself busy with other things besides video games and the internet. After 9 pm I was not allowed to play video games, so I decided to listen to my favorite songs and start drawing before bedtime. I discovered Posca pens from one of the YouTubers I watched and they were perfect for my new style of drawings. Art was a great escape and helped me survive during the lock down.

During the pandemic my mom picked up baking and wanted to practice presenting her work. I was getting into editing and digital art. My mom signed me up for a photography and lighting class. We started to film videos. I would be her camera woman and she would be my video subject. My dad would edit the audio while I would do the lighting and video editing. It became an ongoing family project during the pandemic and we would post them for fun!
