TOPIC: WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

My happy place is my home with my family. I love being at home, and playing in my front yard with my brother. I play in the evening and I like going to school online and seeing my teacher Mrs.Moushon, and my friends Ayva, and Angela, and everyone else. My house is beautiful and it is my happy place.

TOPIC: A FAVORITE 2020 FAMILY MEMORY

The most important memory of 2020 is my grandpa. In March of that year he went to heaven. Being around him brought me joy. I really enjoyed picking oranges and tangerines at grandpa’s house.

The Chinese Ox in Southern California

Missing "C" (seeing) My Favorite Plaswijckpark in the Netherlands. This year, I could not revisit the Netherlands where I spent my happiest childhood till 5 years old due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I miss my friends and our happy time in Plaswijckpark in Rotterdam. I vividly remember my family and my best friends' family visited it frequently. I love and miss the flowers, trains, boats, rafts, various rides, and the indoor playground tremendously. After visiting so many parks in different countries,

Plaswijckpark is always the happiest place in my memory, and I always revisit it when I travel in Rotterdam. When I drew my artwork, I missed the "c" in the spelling of "Plaswijckpark." After moving to the the U.S., I gradually lost my Dutch language skill, but I will forever keep my happy memory there.

TOPIC: A FAVORITE 2020 FAMILY MEMORY

2020 was a year under the shadow of COVID-19. My family tried to stay safe and enjoy different activities as much as possible. A major family event was that my dad drove back from the east coast of Canada to the west coast of the U.S. for Christmas. I even got a new IPAD from him as a gift, which I took to different places to play Pokemon Go. Since we had to keep physical distance from people, we took the opportunity of getting closer to nature. We enjoyed skiing and hiking as a family.

TOPIC: COMMUNITY

This drawing depicts me and one of my friends at the duck pond in El Dorado Park feeding birds. I drew this because I have been going there a lot lately. It's wonderfully peaceful and almost nostalgic for me; I lived in the Netherlands before where I also fed birds a lot. There is a lot of nature, something you don’t find often in Southern California. This park in the drawing reminds me of the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, there were grass fields with flowers and herds of animals, forests with chirping birds, and clear skies with white fluffy clouds. It was possible to experience every bit of nature: snowy days, sunny days, and rainy days too! It was also very clean and eco friendly with trams, buses, trains, and barely any cars. El Dorado Park is the closest thing my Southern California community can get to the nature filled Netherlands. In this piece of art, I am hoping to capture a glimpse of what little nature that can be found here.

TOPIC: NEW SKILL/HOBBY OF 2020

The Chinese Ox in Southern California

2020 was definitely a great year for starting new hobbies. One of the new things I learned was drawing and painting. This guó huà style drawing, which is a traditional Chinese painting style, features a jacaranda tree and an ox. The jacaranda tree represents Southern California, which is my current home. Meanwhile, the ox represents the Year of the Ox of the Chinese New Year Zodiacs. I used the guó huà style because I am learning drawing and painting via online lessons from my cousin who is living in China. Together, the jacaranda tree and the ox in the guó huà style symbolize my ancestry, family in China, my current home, and the new skill I learned.
