TOPIC: A FAVORITE 2020 FAMILY MEMORY

When COVID hit it turned our lives upside down. All of a sudden we found ourselves living in a world of isolation. It was hard for my sisters and I to understand what was going on, but it was scary. Every time we turned on the tv people seemed panicked and there was talk about the number of people very sick and dying. For a while every day felt the same and no one really knew what was going to happen. Our family tried to stay positive even though this terrible pandemic was happening. One day in April, we decided to get a COVID puppy named Levi. Levi has been one of the brightest spots of our COVID experience! This is a drawing of a picture of me and my sisters with Levi in the car the day our family picked him up to bring him home…one of my best memories of 2020!

TOPIC: COMMUNITY

Me, my family, friends, and neighborhood love going to the beach together. Without my community I wouldn’t have a great time. What community means to me is spending time with each other and I hope you see that in my painting.

TOPIC: NEW SKILL/HOBBY OF 2020

I started gardening as a hobby during quarantine. One of my birthday gifts was a set of dog-shaped plant pots. I was excited to use them, so my mom and I went to Lowes later that week to chose three succulents. I chose the succulents I thought were colorful and unique.

The plants I picked were called “Aquamarine” and “Murasaki”. The third one I chose was called “Bear’s Paws” because the plant’s appendages are claw-shaped and feel fuzzy.

TOPIC: WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

Painting Name: Rush

This is my most recent and one of my favorite pieces. It captivated me while I was painting it because I was so excited to see the feeling of surfing taking form on the canvas. The surfer is dropping down the wave, which is my favorite part. It feels like a rush, and I cannot wait to get back to the water.

TOPIC: A FAVORITE 2020 FAMILY MEMORY

In this drawing I drew a forest with trees and a pond. I wanted to recreate the memory of exploring a beautiful forest. Since quarantine had my family and I locked in, we had no interaction with the outside world for months. But one day we decided to take a stroll to venture into a forest. Since my dad is constantly at work, this is one of the few times we actually spent together.

TOPIC: COMMUNITY

Los Al High School is very strong in the four A’s: athletics, academics, activities, and the arts. I wanted to highlight all four of those categories in my drawing since that is what makes Los Al a unique and fun school to go to. I had to include the mascot, a griffin, as the main point. Each different small drawing on the outside helps emphasize all 4 A’s and highlights the fun things you can get involved in. Since Los Al provides all these activities, everyday of school is a new adventure.

TOPIC: NEW SKILL/HOBBY OF 2020

With my extra time in 2020, I would start my day by preparing a healthy breakfast as I enjoyed the quiet morning. One dish that liked to prepare was avocado toast.

Jacqueline Ng Entry.jpg

With each piece of toast and half of an avocado, I would experiment with different preparation methods and different seasoning and flavoring combinations—some days a squirt of tangy lemon, some days a hint of honey, and other days a pinch of pepper. Each morning brought a different twist to the classic dish, but nonetheless, the star of the show was the avocado.

TOPIC: WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

To me a sunset is the most beautiful thing in the world and a sunset on a beach is double the wonder. Sunsets on beach just make me feel so at peace and calm, which I think we all need. The reference for this painting actually came from a local beach.

TOPIC: A FAVORITE 2020 FAMILY MEMORY

Located in sunny Solvang, CA, the Alisal Guest Ranch has been the location of 12 years of family memories for me. There is so much to do, from riding horses to relaxing by the lake. To be in such a beautiful place surrounded by the ones I love, it feels like my second home.

TOPIC: NEW SKILL/HOBBY OF 2020

When the first wave of the pandemic and ensuing quarantines hit, I used the time to learn how to sew. My grandma is an expert seamstress and has tried many times to teach me how to sew with a machine, but my younger self didn't seem quite cut out for it.

I took sewing lessons at the Sewing Lab in Los Alamitos during middle school but unfortunately had not used those skills since that time. I decided to get back into it! I jumped in head-first and made a historically accurate 1750's gown. It took weeks of work and I learned a lot about myself. This time that I spent sewing inspired me to make this piece featuring a vintage pattern that I have as well as a model of the dress.
